How Do You Align Technology Strategies With Environmental Sustainability?

In the quest for a greener future, we've gathered insights from top executives on making technology strategies more environmentally sustainable. From a CEO's advice on optimizing energy and minimizing waste to a Managing Director's call to prioritize impactful and efficient tech, explore innovative approaches in these four expert responses.

    • Optimize Energy and Minimize Waste
    • Blockchain for Eco-Friendly Solutions
    • Support Nonprofits with Sustainable Tech
    • Prioritize Impactful and Efficient Tech

    Optimize Energy and Minimize Waste

To ensure our technology strategy is environmentally sustainable, we focus on optimizing energy efficiency and minimizing waste through conscious decision-making in both hardware and software. One key approach we implement is utilizing cloud computing and virtualization, which reduces the need for physical servers and lowers overall energy consumption. Additionally, we prioritize working with suppliers who adhere to eco-friendly practices and encourage the use of renewable energy in data centers.

An example of this in action is our transition to using energy-efficient hardware and implementing serverless architecture for certain applications. This shift has allowed us to reduce the carbon footprint associated with maintaining physical infrastructure while still maintaining performance and scalability. This strategy not only supports our business objectives but also contributes to long-term sustainability goals by minimizing environmental impact.

    Blockchain for Eco-Friendly Solutions

At Blocktech Brew, we make sure our technology helps the environment by focusing on eco-friendly solutions. We aim to reduce energy use, lower carbon footprints, and support green projects with blockchain and AI.

One of the best examples is a client who approached us to tokenize carbon credits. These credits help companies track and reduce their carbon emissions. We built a system using blockchain that made it easy for them to trade and manage these credits securely. This process helped businesses lower their carbon emissions while ensuring everything was transparent and trustworthy.

    Support Nonprofits with Sustainable Tech

We ensure our technology strategy is environmentally sustainable by providing our platform to nonprofits at no cost, helping them increase donations and volunteer engagement without additional paid resources. This approach amplifies their impact while minimizing our carbon footprint. By empowering organizations to do more with less, we contribute to broader social and environmental goals. For instance, one nonprofit using our platform doubled their volunteer base within a year, achieving more community outreach with less environmental impact. Additionally, our use of AWS, which is committed to operating on 100% renewable energy by 2025, further supports our sustainability goals.

    Prioritize Impactful and Efficient Tech

Technology strategies that aim to be environmentally sustainable will prioritize achievable improvements in impactful areas with a high return on investment. Quick wins early on will engage teams to continue working on improvements, convinced that their changes can make an impact.

A great example is the migration from Intel/AMD to the ARM64 CPU architecture for cloud workloads. On AWS, using ARM64 for workloads can reduce the carbon footprint as it uses 60% less energy than comparable x86-based instances. Other cloud providers have similar performance gains for ARM-based processors. As most applications and tools now have ARM64 support, migrations to the new CPU architecture can be done without too much effort. As a side effect of being more efficient, using the ARM architecture will also result in a cost advantage because of the better price-performance ratio.
