I believe that a successful CTO will know when to prioritize operational efficiency and when to prioritize innovation.

It's not binary throughout time which one should take precedence; it's dependent on the conditions of the market, the conditions of your product, and how strong your current contracts are.

If you are trying to disrupt and displace market leaders, you need to innovate. If you are trying to keep top-tier clients, you need to be stable and reliable with a lower priority on innovation. Of course, you always need to innovate, or you will become stale and fall behind the competition, but the level of effort and money placed on innovation would be lower.

Balancing innovation with operational efficiency is crucial in my role as a leader in mental health tech. Balancing innovation with operational efficiency is a constant tightrope walk, and in my experience, it's not about choosing one over the other but ensuring they work together.

Early in my career, I was part of a team that introduced a new digital ordering system in a fast-paced food service chain. The idea was great on paper—cut down wait times and improve customer experience—but the initial rollout slowed down operations instead of improving them. Why? Because we focused too much on the innovation itself and not enough on how it integrated into our existing workflows. Lesson learned: innovation should enhance efficiency, not disrupt it.

Now, my approach is efficiency first, innovation second—but not in a way that stifles creativity. I make sure that:

Innovation is problem-driven: Instead of chasing trends, I focus on solutions that fix bottlenecks or elevate performance.

Data dictates direction: If an idea doesn't have measurable benefits, it's not worth the risk.

Implementation is phased, not abrupt: A/B testing and gradual rollouts help prevent operational chaos.

One of the biggest mindset shifts I've adopted is seeing innovation as an iterative process rather than a one-time overhaul. Small, consistent improvements often outperform big, disruptive changes.

Pro tip: Always ask, "Does this innovation make my team's job easier or harder?" If it adds complexity without clear benefits, it's a red flag.
